THE STORY BEHIND
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a time-honoured celebration observed on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
It commemorates the legacy of the ancient poet Qu Yuan, whose devotion to his country has been honoured for centuries through dragon boat races and the sharing of traditional foods.
Among these, rice dumplings (known as zongzi 糉子) hold a special place.
Their origins are said to date back over 2,000 years, when people wrapped glutinous rice in leaves and threw them into rivers to protect Qu Yuan’s body so fishes would eat the rice dumplings instead of his body, a gesture that evolved into the beloved culinary tradition enjoyed today.
